Das Internet avanciert zu einem bedeutenden Medium und wird von immer mehr Menschen genutzt. Außerdem wird das mobile Telefonieren ermöglicht, was dazu führt, dass im Jahr 2000 bereits 29,8 % aller deutschen Haushalte mindestens ein mobiles Telefon besaßen.1

Diese Entwicklung beeinflusste und beeinflusst noch heute die gesamte Öffentlichkeit und verändert somit die Lebensweise fast aller Menschen. Dienstleistungsanbieter, öffentliche Einrichtungen und Institutionen müssen sich daher diesem Trend anpassen. Gerade für Bibliotheken ist diese Anpassung an die neuen Medien und die neuen Kommunikationswege eine große Herausforderung, da sie sich hauptsächlich mit dem sehr alten Medium „Buch“ befassen. Allerdings gibt es Wege und Möglichkeiten, das Angebot der Bibliotheken mithilfe der neuen Entwicklungen zu verbessern und den Zugang zu den Beständen zu erleichtern. Zwei solcher Maßnahmen werden nun vorgestellt.
