Se prima si accontentava di una vita ordinaria, seguendo docilmente il percorso tracciato per lei dai suoi genitori, ora Sofia, privata del suo equilibrio da sentimenti contrastanti e impetuosi, si trova spesso ad uscire dagli schemi, catapultata in un mondo che non conosce affatto. Infatti, frequentando Fabio, Sofia viene in contatto con realtà molto diverse dalla propria, si trova in mezzo ad equilibri familiari differenti, norme non scritte, convenzioni sociali e taciti accordi che regolano una società falsamente stabile, creata per accogliere e nascondere le paure della gente. La ragazza si scopre affascinata da persone e situazione che prima la lasciavano indifferente, che forse neanche notava, troppo presa da se stessa e dalla maschera che si era costruita. Durante la sua ricerca, Sofia si imbatte nel personaggio di Andrea, ragazza rumena di appena sedici anni, orfana di entrambi i genitori e costretta a prostituirsi per mantenere e proteggere se stessa e suo fratello, l’unico membro della famiglia rimastole. Nonostante questo, Andrea conserva un’innocenza, un’integrità e una determinazione che affascinano e stupiscono Sofia al punto da convincerla che quella ragazza non sia poi così diversa da lei e che i loro desideri, le loro speranze e i loro sogni siano simili come lo è il loro sguardo sul mondo. In questo viaggio, però, Sofia non è sola: dietro c’è sempre Fabio a spronarla e criticarla con i suoi modi bruschi e il suo atteggiamento severo affinché insegua la sua vita, superando la paura dell’opinione e mettendo la sua al di sopra di quella della società, spesso dura quando dovrebbe essere comprensiva e indifferente quando avrebbe il potere di cambiare un sistema inadatto ad accogliere la molteplice varietà dei comportamenti umani. Sofia però si scontra presto con la realtà: la sua nuova vita non è accettabile per chi l’ha vista crescere e la sua famiglia, insieme ai suoi amici, persone sulle quali ha sempre potuto contare, diventa l’ostacolo più arduo da superare.
