Aleksej Ivànovic, il narratore del romanzo, è il precettore in una famiglia stravagante, composta da un vecchio generale innamorato pazzo di una giovane francese dal passato turbolento, mademoiselle Blanche, di due bambini dei quali è il maestro, dalla figliastra del generale Polina Aleksàndrovna, della quale lui è follemente innamorato senza essere ricambiato.
