Als sein größtes Lebenswerk sind hierbei die vormaligen Handtaschenführer - die „Buildings of England“ - auf Struktur und Veränderung zu untersuchen.

Karl Baedeker verfaßte im 19. Jahrhundert Reiseführer für gebildete Reisende, während Georg Dehio 1900 die Erarbeitung eines Handbuches der deutschen Kunstdenkmäler auf sich nahm. Dieses wurde 1904 durch den Kaiser genehmigt und zu einem fünfbändigen Werk über die Denkmäler bis in die Zeit des Klassizismus gefertigt.

Im Vergleich hierzu ist Nikolaus Pevsner mit seinen „Buildings of England“ eher in einer vermittelnden Position zu nennen. Einerseits enthielten seine Bücher kleine, persönliche Reisebeschreibungen der englischen Landschaft, andererseits waren die detaillierten Beschreibungen von Städten und Sehenswürdigkeiten in alphabetischer Reihenfolge und mit chronologischem Sinngehalt Reihenfolge systematisch nach sakralen und öffentlichen Gebäuden geordnet.
