Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2009 im Fachbereich Soziologie - Kultur, Technik und Völker, Note: 3, Technische Universität Darmstadt, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Stadt ist eine seit Jahrtausenden bestehende Siedlungsform zu deren wesentlichen Merkmalen „(…) dichte Besiedlung und Konzentration von Wohn- und Arbeitsstätten einer Bevölkerung mit überwiegend tertiär- und sekundärwirtschaftlichen Lebensunterhalt, Zentrum von politischen, Wirtschafts-, Verwaltungs-, und Kultureinrichtungen mit eigener architektonischen Prägung (…)“ gehören (Bertelsmann 2006,672). Eine große Bedeutung für die Stadt hat die räumliche und bauliche Gestaltung der städtischen Ansiedlungen, denn die Wolkenkratzer prägen das Bild der Stadtzentren rund um den Globus. Bemerkenswert ist jedoch, dass nicht alle Großstädte versuchen, mit Skylines ihr Image aufzuwerten. Einige Städte, darunter auch Hamburg, haben sogar bewusst unterlassen, Hochhäuser zu bauen: „Hamburg hat es sorgfältig vermieden, sich der in den achtziger Jahren von Investoren und vielen Wirtschaftspolitikern forcierten Hochhauseuphorie, der Frankfurt, London, Brüssel oder Rotterdam erlegen sind, zu öffnen“ (Kossak. In: Wentz 1993, 144)
Andererseits ist die Stadt aber mehr als nur die Summe aus ihren Häusern, Straßen und Plätzen. Die Stadt ist ein lebendiges Wesen und jede hat ihren besonderen, meist geschichtsträchtigen Ort. Außerdem versucht jede Stadt ihren Namen, so abzugrenzen, dass er nur für sie und keine andere steht, beispielsweise durch geografische Ergänzungen (Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurt an der Oder). Das alles reicht aber heutzutage längst noch nicht damit eine Stadt einzigartig zu bezeichnen. Es ist wichtig, dass sie eigenes Image besitzt, was dazu führt, dass die Städte wie ein Produkt betrachtet werden und miteinander mit unterschiedlichsten Mitteln konkurrieren müssen um ihre Identifikationsfähigkeit zu bewahren.
In dieser Hausarbeit soll zunächst gezeigt werden wie sich die Bilder der Stadt in unserer Wahrnehmung einprägen. Dabei beziehe ich mich auf die Theorie von Kevin Lynch, nach dessen Meinung die sinnliche Wahrnehmung der Stadt eine bedeutsame Rolle spielt. Danach werde ich die neue Architekturrichtungen näher beschreiben und anschließend auf die Methoden eingehen, die die Städte nutzen, um einzigartig, einmalig und unvergesslich zu bleiben.
