Wir leben heute in einer Gesellschaft, in der die Menschen und vor allem die Medien sensibler auf Gewaltakte Jugendlicher und Kinder reagieren. „Die kulturelle Sensibilität hat sich gegenüber allen Formen von Gewalt erhöht." Diese Tatsache ist nicht nur negativ zu bewerten, ganz im Gegenteil, sie trägt dazu bei, dass die Pädagogen, Lehrerinnen und Lehrer sich mit diesem Problem auseinander setzen, und wenn nötig an ihren Schulen Präventionsarbeit leisten können.

„Gewalt unter Schulkindern ist zweifellos ein sehr altes Phänomen. Die Tatsache, daß einige Kinder häufig und systematisch von anderen Kindern gemobbt und angegriffen werden, wurde in Werken der Literatur beschrieben, und viele Erwachsene haben damit Erfahrung aus ihrer eigenen Schulzeit. In den letzten Jahren hat dieses Problem an Schärfe deutlich zugenommen.“ Der aktuelle Vorfall an der Berliner Rütli-Hauptschule im Stadtteil Neukölln macht deutlich, dass Gewalt an Schulen heutzutage präsenter und aktueller ist, als viele Menschen angenommen haben. Wenn es Pädagogen nicht mehr darum geht ihren Lehrplan zu erfüllen, sondern sie nur noch froh sind, mit dem Leben aus dem Klassenzimmer zu kommen und ihre Schüler als unbeschulbar deklariert werden, so zeigt dies deutlich, wie schlimm die Lage wirklich ist.

Der Hilferuf der Lehrer der Rütli-Schule an die Regierung „Das Verhalten im Unterricht ist geprägt durch totale Ablehnung und menschenverachtendes Auftreten. (…) Der Intensivtäter wird zum Vorbild! (…) Wir sind ratlos.“, kommt zu spät. Die Lehrer sind nicht mehr „Herr“ der Lage. Die Ursache für diese gewalttätigen Vorkommnisse liegt im Umfeld der Schule. Der hohe Ausländeranteil (ca. 83% der Schüler sind nicht deutscher Herkunft) und fehlende Integration sowie fehlende Zukunftsperspektiven fördern Aggressionen und Gewalt.
