Diese Textsorte ist seit Jahrzehnten in den Lehrplänen fest verankert und wird meist ab der achten, spätestens aber ab der neunten Jahrgangsstufe, zum festen Bestandteil eines jeden Deutschunterrichtes.
Der Sinn des Erörterns und Argumentierens liegt auf der Hand. Durch das intensive Auseinandersetzen mit einem Thema oder Sachverhalt wird die Identität des Schreibers weiter ausgebildet, da er sich über seine Einstellung zu dem gegebenen Thema Gedanken machen muss und seine Meinung zu diesem Thema vor anderen vertreten muss. Die Schüler werden so auf das Berufsleben oder den eventuellen Besuch einer Hochschule vorbereitet. Oder anders ausgedrückt: Die Schüler sollen zu mündigen Bürgerinnen und Bürgern ausgebildet werden.
Des Weiteren dient das schriftliche Auseinandersetzen der Sprachbildung der Schüler. Gleichzeitig wird durch das Argumentieren die soziale Einsicht, und das Niveau sprachlicher Rationalität der Schülerinnen und Schüler gesteigert.
Im Folgenden werden zunächst die traditionellen Formen der Erörterung vorgestellt und deren Verankerung im Lehrplan der bayrischen Realschule erläutert. Im Anschluss daran wird gezeigt, in wie weit die traditionelle Erörterung in der heutigen Aufsatzdidaktik kritisiert wird und welche Änderungen aufgrund dessen gefordert werden. Zum Schluss dieser Arbeit wird darüber hinaus eine kurze Unterrichtsreihe zum Erörtern vorgestellt, die die neuen didaktischen Ansätze berücksichtigt.
