Diesen Fragen ist die Veranstaltung, in deren Rahmen diese Hausarbeit entstanden ist, in vielschichtiger,
umfassender Weise nachgegangen.
Die vorliegende Hausarbeit befasst sich überwiegend mit einem etwas kleineren „Ausschnitt“ der obigen Betrachtungsebene, nämlich mit der Masse als ein aus sich selbst heraus organisierter, hierarchischer Zusammenschluss, der seinen wertkonservativen Status Quo auch mit
Gewalt zu verteidigen bereit ist – die Gang.
Die Gang an sich unterscheidet sich von anderen Formen der Masse in vielerlei Hinsicht. Gleichzeitig hat die „Gang“ eine historische
Entwicklungsgeschichte und scheint als ein soziales Konstrukt der Gesellschaft immanent zu sein: Je nach Blickwinkel vermuten Betrachter in der Gang den Ursprung heutiger politischer
Systeme oder global operierender Unternehmen.
Der Ende 2002 in die Kinos gebrachte Film „Gangs of New York“ von Regisseur Martin Scorsese schildert die Geschichte der Gangs in den „Five Points“, den Elendsvierteln in der wachsenden Großstadt New York in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts.
Anhand dieses auf der gleichnamigen historischen Abhandlung von Herbert Asbury basierenden Films lassen sich sozialpsychologische Strukturen von Gangs und Mobs aufzeigen,ebenso wie typische, funktionalisierte filmische Darstellungsweisen von Masse und Massenanführern.
Entsprechend der thematischen Ausrichtung des Seminars orientiert sich diese Hausarbeit am Film wie an einem „roten Faden“ und arbeitet für die Schlüsselszenen deren sozialpsychologischen
und filmischen Besonderheiten heraus, mit einem klaren Schwerpunkt auf dem letzteren Aspekt.
