Mit einer ganz einfachen Kosten–Nutzen–Analyse, wie wir sie alle aus der traditionellen Mikroökonomie kennen, kommt eigentlich jede Person (homo oeconomicus) zum Schluss, dass es sich für sie nicht lohnt, an einer Abstimmung oder Wahl zu partizipieren. Die Kosten überwiegen den Nutzen bei weitem. Warum aber gibt es viele Menschen, die jedesmal die Zeit auf sich nehmen, ihren Stimmzettel abzugeben?
Wir werden versuchen, dieser Frage aus einer ökonomischen Sicht nachzugehen, wirtschaftliche Argumente anzubringen, um sie anschliessend möglichst befriedigend beantworten zu können.
Die Neue Politische Ökonomie (engl. public choice) liefert uns die grundlegenden Denkanstösse, Konzeptionen und Modelle, auf welchen wir unsere Argumentation aufbauen.
