Immer mehr Unternehmen entscheiden sich mittlerweile dafür, die Öffentlichkeit über ökologische Auswirkungen ihrer Produkte und Produktion sowie über ihre betrieblichen Aktivitäten zum Umweltschutz zu informieren (vgl. Teichert 1995, S. 15). Dadurch wird der Umweltschutz in den Unternehmen immer mehr zum zentralen Thema. Aus diesem Grund müssen sich die Industrie-, Handels und Dienstleistungsunternehmen immer mehr den Umweltgesetzen und dem Druck der Öffentlichkeit beugen (vgl. Huskic 2002). Daher wurde Anfang der 70er Jahre das Umweltinformationssystem Ökobilanz entwickelt. Es soll die Schnittstelle zwischen den Wirtschafts- und Naturwissenschaften bilden (vgl. Siegenthaler 2006, S. 19). Mit Hilfe der Ökobilanz sollen ökologische Ziele in den alltäglichen unternehmerischen Entscheidungsprozess und betrieblichen Ablauf dauerhaft integriert werden. Eine umweltaktive Unternehmensführung soll gefördert werden. (vgl. Huskic 2002). Dennoch steht kaum ein anderes Instrument des betrieblichen Umweltmanagements so öffentlich in der Diskussion, wie die Ökobilanzierung. Dies bezüglich besteht noch eine erhebliche Unsicherheit und das Instrument kommt daher in der betrieblichen Managementpraxis selten zum Einsatz, obwohl es eigentlich zur innerbetrieblichen Entscheidungsfindung und zur Verbesserung des betrieblichen Umweltverhaltens Sinn macht (vgl. Sietz & Seuring 1997, S. 11).
Daher stellt sich die Frage: Woran liegt es, dass dieses Instrument nur selten eingesetzt wird, woher kommt die Unsicherheit in den Betrieben und wie kann dieses Instrument dahin gehend optimiert werden?
Die folgende Hausarbeit im Modul Betriebliche Umweltpolitik gibt zuerst einen Ein-blick in die historische Entwicklung der Ökobilanz-Methode, um daraus den Begriff Ökobilanzierung zu definieren. Daraufhin werden verschiedene potenzielle Verfahren betrachtet sowie die Methodik zur Durchführung der Ökobilanz. Die einzelnen Phasen zur Erstellung einer Ökobilanz werden kritisch betrachtet und potenzielle Lösungen werden herausgestellt.
