Nach der NS-Machtergreifung in Deutschland wollten rechtsextreme Österreicher die Regierung mit Gewalt stürzen und den "Anschluß" erzwingen. Nach dem Verbot der NSDAP im Juni 1933 in Österreich flohen viele NS-Anhänger als "politisch Verfolgte" nach Deutschland. Sie wurden als "Österreichische Legion" in die deutsche SA integriert und militärisch ausgebildet, um Österreich "sturmreif" zu schießen. Die Rolle der Legion beim NS-Putsch im Juli 1934 führte in Deutschland zu ihrer Entwaffnung. Bis März 1938 fristete sie ein Schattendasein und war beim deutschen Einmarsch nicht beteiligt. NSDAP und SA in Österreich hatten eine lange Vorgeschichte, die hier mit ihren bis 1867 zurückreichenden Entwicklungen des übersteigerten Nationalismus Österreichs gezeigt wird. Lange vor Hitler gab es dort ein rechtsradikales, lautstarkes Lager, das eher auf die deutschen völkischen Kreise ausstrahlte als umgekehrt. Nach 1918 erwuchsen in Österreich Kräfte, die Ursachen und Folgen des verlorenen Krieges verleugneten und bedenkenlos die Signale deutscher Fanatiker annahmen. Ab 1920 wirkte die "Dynamik" Hitlers auf Rechtsextreme in Österreich, so dass sich seit 1926 dort die NSDAP-"Hitlerbewegung" als maßgebliche politische Kraft etablierte. Die unübersichtlichen und verwirrenden Zusammenhänge sollen in diesem ersten Band aufgezeigt werden. Mit Hilfe bekannter Dokumente und etlicher neuer Quellenfunde aus deutschen und österreichischen Archiven können Lücken in der Geschichte der NSDAP und der SA in Österreich verkleinert werden, ohne Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit zu erheben. In einem zweiten Band soll bald die wechselvolle Geschichte der Legion in den Jahren 1933 bis 1938 beschrieben werden.
