Die junge Aisha, ein Findelkind, ist in einer Oase im Königreich Zarador aufgewachsen. Ihr alter Lehrer Zaras hat ihr vor seinem Tod den Auftrag erteilt, "die letzte Blüte" zu suchen.

Doch dann schlagen die Blutreiter, die Vollstrecker des Todesgottes, erbarmungslos zu. Aisha entrinnt ihnen nur knapp und findet Unterschlupf in der alten Stadt Zaradan, wo sie als Heilerin tätig ist. Doch auch hier ist sie nicht sicher. Als sie sich auf die Reise zu einer Seherin begibt, um etwas über ihre Herkunft zu erfahren, heften sich die Blutreiter wieder an ihre Fersen.

Aisha flieht mit ihrem Gefährten Palo durch die Wüste. Die beiden trotzen dort sämtlichen Gefahren und erreichen schließlich ihr Ziel, wo die Blutreiter abermals ihre Spur aufnehmen. Mit viel Glück entkommen sie diesen Männern und fliehen ein weiteres Mal. Doch als sie in einen gewaltigen Sandsturm geraten, verlieren sie ihre Pferde. Mit Mühe und Not erreichen sie das Tal, in dem sie auf der Hinreise in einer riesigen Tropfsteinhöhle Wasser gefunden haben.

Da hat Aisha einen Traum, den beide kurzerhand in die Tat umsetzen: Da sie die Wüste ohne Reittiere nicht weiter durchqueren können, wollen sie ihre Reise in der Höhle fortsetzen. Doch welche Gefahren lauern in der Dunkelheit auf sie? Und wohin wird sie ihr Weg letztendlich führen?
