Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Linguistik, Note: gut, Bergische Universität Wuppertal (BUGH Wuppertal), Veranstaltung: Literatut der "Nineties", Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Thomas Hardys Tess of the d´Urbervilles erschien erstmals 1891 und gehört somit in die Zeit des Viktorianismus und wird oft in Naturalismusdefinitionen genannt. Der Roman enthält eine große Bandbreite an Themen, Motiven und Weltanschauungen. Er bietet sich hervorragend als Analyseobjekt an, denn Hardy bedient sich einer Bildsprache, nutzt Tiermetaphern, verwendet Symbole und Metaphern. Interessante Aspekte der Betrachtung könnten naturalistische Elemente sein, religiöse Verweise, Landschaftsbeschreibungen, Charaktere und deren Konstelationen und noch einiges mehr. Beispielsweise wird Tess als „figure in a landscape“ dargestellt und häufig mit Tiermetaphern beschrieben. Das häufige Auftreten von Vögeln und die damit verbundene Bildsprache lohnte ebenfalls einer genauere Betrachtung. Des weiteren ist Hardys Verwendung von Licht als visuelles Element ein interessanter Aspekt. Ebenfalls lohnenswert wäre die Betrachtung der Rolle von Grabstätten in Tess´ Leben. Es gäbe noch etliche anderen Analyseaspekte und Thematiken, von denen hier aber nicht weiter die Rede sein soll. Die folgende Arbeit soll sich mit den deterministischen Elementen in Tess of the d´Urbervilles beschäftigen. Es soll gezeigt werden, dass der Roman nicht einwandfrei der Gattung des Naturalismus zuzuordnen ist, da Hardy Strukturen der klassischen Tragödie einbringt und sein Determinismus nicht gleich dem des Naturalismus ist. Hierzu soll die Handlung nach den kausalen Zusammenhängen, die Tess´ tragisches Schicksal bestimmen, untersucht werden. Zudem wird die Bestimmtheit des Geschehens von vielen Zufällen begleitet, was dazu führte, dass einige Kritiker Hardys Glaubwürdigkeit und seinen Realitätssinn in Frage stellten. Dennoch mögen Hardys konstruierten Zufälle an mancher Stelle seltsam erscheinen, doch sind sie nie unmöglich. Außerdem werden Vorzeichen, welche diese Kausalketten begleiten und auf das tragische Ende deuten, genauer betrachtet. Hierunter fällt besonders das häufige Auftreten der Farben weiß und rot. Anschließend sollen Parallelen der Romanstruktur mit Strukturen der klassischen Tragödie untersucht werden, um die These der Determiniertheit des Romans zu unterstreichen.
