Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2009 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Afrika, Note: -, Universität zu Köln, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die koloniale Geschichte des Kongo ist bedeutend von der äußerst brutalen und unmenschlichen Inbesitznahme und Ausbeutung durch König Leopold II. von Belgien geprägt. 1908 trat Leopold II. den seit 1885 in seinem Privatbesitz stehenden Kongo-Freistaat an den Belgischen Staat ab. Dies war nicht zuletzt auf den enormen Druck der internationalen Proteste über die sogenannten „Kongo-Greuel“ zurückzuführen.
Im Rahmen der kolonialen Ausbeutung des Kongo-Freistaates von 1885 bis 1908 entfaltete sich eine massive öffentliche Kritik in Europa und den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika an den kolonialen Verbrechen König Leopolds II. In der Folge kam es zu einer weltöffentlichen und medienwirksamen Thematisierung des „Kongo-Problems“.
Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Arbeit stehen zwei offizielle Berichte, welche die Kritik an den „Kongo-Greueln“ aufnahmen, sie untersuchten und beurteilten. Zum einen handelt es sich dabei um den Casement Report vom 11. Dezember 1903, benannt nach Roger Casement, dem britischen Konsul, welcher diesen Bericht für die britische Regierung anfertigte.
Zum anderen liegt dieser Arbeit der Bericht einer von Leopold II. beauftragten Untersuchungskommission zu Grunde, welche ebenfalls die öffentlich kritisierten Missstände im Kongo-Freistaat recherchierte und am 31. Oktober 1905 an den Herrscher übergeben wurde. Der Bericht wurde auch in Form des „Bulletin officiel de l’Etat Independant du Congo - Nr. 9 & 10“, d. h. als eine Art Amtsblatt publiziert.
Zunächst soll der Begriff der „Kongo-Greuel“ näher beleuchtet und von Verbrechen anderer Kolonialmächte in Afrika abgegrenzt werden. Was waren die charakteristischen Besonderheiten im Kongo? Was verstanden die Zeitgenossen unter den „infamous cruelties“ oder den „Congo Atrocities“? Zwar scheint es offensichtlich, dass diese über eine rein wirtschaftliche Ausbeutung der indigenen Bevölkerung hinausgingen. Dennoch scheint eine Konkretisierung der kolonialen Verbrechen innerhalb des Kongo-Freistaates in diesem Kontext sehr nützlich für die weitere wissenschaftliche Aufarbeitung.
