Dies ist das Ergebnis der rasanten Entwicklung, die das Controlling in der zweiten Hälfte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts vollzogen hat. Zunächst waren es vornehmlich große Unternehmen, die Controllingabteilungen einrichteten. Heute ist Controlling auch in kleinen und mittleren Betrieben keine Seltenheit mehr. Sogar nicht erwerbswirtschaftliche Organisationen, wie etwa öffentliche Verwaltungen, Krankenhäuser, Universitäten, die Bundeswehr etc., bedienen sich zunehmend eines Controllings. Mit der wachsenden Bedeutung des Controllings in der betrieblichen Praxis stieg auch das wissenschaftliche Interesse am Phänomen Controlling. Als Indiz für die wissenschaftliche Relevanz des Controllings seien die vermehrte Einrichtung von Controllinglehrstühlen an Hochschulen sowie die wachsende Anzahl controllingspezifischer Publikationen genannt. Auch wenn Controlling in der betrieblichen Praxis als etabliert gelten kann, fehlt ein einheitliches Controllingkonzept. Empirische Untersuchungen zeigen sogar, dass die Aufgaben, die Controller in der betrieblichen Praxis übernehmen, stark differieren. Eine eindeutige Schwerpunktbildung ist in der betrieblichen Praxis kaum erkennbar. Ein einheitliches Controllingkonzept zu entwickeln, um die betriebliche Praxis nach diesen Vorstellungen zu gestalten, ist seit langem ein Ziel zahlreicher Wissenschaftler in der Controllingforschung. Der koordinationsorientierte Controllingansatz, der auf Horváth zurückgeht, schien hier lange Zeit den Weg zu weisen. Aufgrund seiner Bedeutung und Verbreitung darf die Forschung, die sich auf den Koordinationsgedanken stützt, als „traditionelle“ Controllingforschung bezeichnet werden. In der jüngsten Vergangenheit wurden neben den „traditionellen“, koordinationsorientierten Controllingkonzepten „neue“ Ansätze in der Controllingforschung entwickelt (Abschnitt 2.2). Zu diesen „neuen“ Ansätzen gehört auch das strukturationstheoretische Konzept von Albrecht Becker.
Diesen Ansatz von Becker gilt es im weiteren Verlauf der vorliegenden Arbeit näher zu beleuchten.
