Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2009 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 1,7, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Unter den Texten, die Franz Kafka Max Brodt schriftlich bat, nach seinem Tode ungelesen zu verbrennen, findet sich ein Brief, in dem sich Kafka an seinen Vater Hermann richtet. Dieser Brief, entstanden zwischen dem 10. und 19. November 1918, hat seit seiner Veröffentlichung eine grundlegende Funktion in der Interpretation kafkascher Literatur eingenommen. Er stellt, auf den ersten Blick, schlichtweg die autobiographische Beschreibung des konfliktreichen Verhältnisses Kafkas zu seinem Vater dar. Das Thema „Obrigkeit vs. Untergebener“, welches in Kafkas Werk immerwieder auftaucht, scheint seinen Prototypen in diesem Verhältnis zu haben. Dadurch ist die Herleitung seiner literarischen Themen aus dem Privatleben zum Allgemeinplatz der Kafkaanalyse geworden.
Auf den zweiten Blick jedoch tun sich einige Fragen auf, durch welche der Stellenwert jenes Briefes ins Wanken gerät. An erster Stelle steht hier das Problem der Kategorisierung, womit bereits Max Brod Schwierigkeiten hatte. Müller-Seidel sieht darin bereits einen Hinweis auf eine mögliche literaturgeschichtliche Zuordnung:
„Die mangelnde Eindeutigkeit in der Zuordnung ist aber ihrerseits schon ein Merkmal moderner Literatur, die auf den Dichtungsbegriff der Tradition nicht festzulegen ist. Es hat daher durchaus seine Richtigkeit, wenn Max Brod nicht recht wußte, wohin denn nun ein Text wie dieser gehören soll: zu den Werken oder zu dem Band der gesammelten Briefe.“

Bis heute besteht kein Konsens darüber, wie der Brief einzuordnen ist, was bereits zur nächsten Frage führt: Handelt es sich beim „Brief an den Vater“ überhaupt wirklich um einen Brief, also ein privates Schreiben, das an einen Empfänger gerichtet ist und in der Absicht verfasst wurde, es diesem zukommen zu lassen? Oder handelt es sich nicht vielmehr um einen literarischen Text, der dem Werk Kafkas zuzuordnen ist? Für Letzteres spräche beispielsweise, dass Hermann Kafka den Brief nie erhalten hat.

Die vorliegende Arbeit soll der Frage nachgehen, welche Absicht hinter Kafkas „Brief an den Vater“ steckt. Hierzu wird zunächst das Vater-Sohn-Verhältnis wie Kafka es im Brief darstellt betrachtet, um anschließend im größeren Zusammenhang Kafkas Vorgehens- und Argumentationsweise, sowie daraus resultierend seine Absicht erkennen zu können.
