Als Anne Hutchinson im November 1637 vor Gericht stand, war sie 46 Jahre alt. Sie hatte 15 Kinder geboren und war schwanger mit dem sechzehnten. Während ihrer Verhandlung, die zu ihrer Verbannung aus der Kolonie führen würde, erwies sich Hutchinson als überaus intelligent, ihren Anklägern bei Weitem überlegen. Das Leben dieser ungewöhnlichen Frau ist Thema dieser Arbeit.
Dabei werde ich mich vor allem auf eine 2004 erschienene Biographie beziehen, verfasst von einer Urenkelin Hutchinsons in elfter Generation. Eve La Plante schuf mit „American Jezebel. The Uncommon Life of Anne Hutchinson“ eine detaillierte Darstellung des Lebens und Werks ihrer Vorfahrin, ohne diese zu verdammen oder zu rechtfertigen. La Plante beschreibt lebhaft das puritanischen Leben des 17. Jahrhunderts, das Leben einer Frau, die ihrer Zeit weit voraus war.
Einen großen Teil meiner Arbeit wird Hutchinsons Verhandlung im November 1637 einnehmen, einen weiteren Teil eine Frage, mit der sich schon viele Historiker eingehend befasst haben. Warum hat Anne Hutchinson ihre kluge Verteidigung aufgegeben, nachdem sie sich ihren Gegnern den größten Teil der Verhandlung als überlegen erwiesen hatte? Warum lieferte sie ihren Anklägern scheinbar freiwillig den Beweis für ihre Schuld?
