Bei einem längeren Aufenthalt trifft er auf ein Mädchen, das anders scheint als alle anderen: Vera Muschnikowa, ruhelos und romantisch, grazil und ungestüm – und sie ist jederzeit zur Liebe bereit. Der Feingeist erliegt ihrem vulgären Zauber, erkennt in ihr seine »sowjetische Manon« und erahnt damit bereits den dunklen Weg, den ihre Liebe nehmen wird.

»Wir kennen von Petrow viele Bücher zur Kunstgeschichte (die auch in viele Sprachen übersetzt worden sind), aber nur wenige Texte, die zur ›schöngeistigen Literatur‹ zählen dürfen. Eigentlich wäre, abgesehen von ein paar philosophischen Miniaturen, allein unsere Erzählung als solche zu bezeichnen.
