Vorerst wird die Geschichte der Kindheit vom Mittelalter bis in die Postmoderne verfolgt um im Weiteren Schlussfolgerungen über die Auswirkungen der Kindheitskonzeptionen für die heutige Gesellschaft zu ziehen. Prognostische Überlegungen runden die Überlegungen über Kindheit ab.
‚Kindheit’ verstanden als soziales Konstrukt und kulturelles Gesellschaftsideal – vielleicht auch als Gesellschaftsillusion – das im systemischen Zusammenhang mit unserer Gesellschaft steht, stellt schon an sich eine Kategorisierung dar. Kindheit ist somit ein Abstraktum, das komplexe Strukturen und Zusammenhänge umfasst, die auf gesellschaftlicher, wie auch individueller Ebene konstruiert sind. Das Problem dieses Ansatzes ist, dass sich durch den Konstruktcharakter unendliche Betrachtungsweisen eröffnen, die weder in ihrer Komplexität noch in ihrer Reichweite erfassbar sind. Grundlegend wird angenommen, dass Menschen sich ihr Verständnis von Innen- und Außenwelt subjektiv „in einem aktiven Konstruktionsprozess“ (Grundmann 1999: 54) aufbauen. „Dabei besteht ein interaktives Wechselverhältnis zwischen den handelnden Subjekten und der gegebenen Außenwelt.“ (ebd.) Das heißt, Individuen kreieren sich ihre eigenen, möglichst schlüssigen Wirklichkeiten durch vergleichende Interaktion und Erfahrung. Diese Wirklichkeiten stellen Teile einer gesellschaftlich angenommenen Realität dar, die die Grundlage von Kommunikation sind. Interaktion ist als komplexe Struktur aus wechselseitigen Kommunikationen und Handlungen zu begreifen, die nicht nur inter-individuell sondern auch zwischen den Individuen und gesellschaftlichen Institutionen stattfindet.
Während lange Zeit angenommen wurde, dass dem menschlichen Wesen die ‚Natur’ zugrunde liegt (Naturalismus), die nur durch Sozialisation und Erziehung sowie durch Umweltbedingungen verdeckt wird, nimmt man heute in den Sozialwissenschaften vermehrt an, dass das Ideal der Natürlichkeit eine Konstruktion ist, um eine Legitimation bereitzustellen, der man die Verantwortung für das menschliche Handeln übertragen kann. „Je mehr wir Gesetze von der Natur ablauschen wollten, um so mehr mussten wir erkennen, dass wir bloß eigene Gesetze erfinden.“ (Reich 2003: 3) Kersten Reich nimmt an, dass der Mensch allein schon wegen seiner Sprache von konstruierender ‚Natur’ ist (ebd: 4). Diese Annahme beruht auf Ferdinand de Saussures Definition von Sprache als geschlossenes, abstraktes System von Zeichen, das Vorstellungen und Lautbilder miteinander verbindet. Es wird erst durch den interaktiven Austausch gefestigt.
