Wells' "The Island of Dr. Moreau" kann kultur- und literaturhistorisch dem fin de siècle zugeordnet werden. Eine ganze Reihe von Themen, die charakteristisch für diese Epoche waren, wurden im Roman verarbeitet. Diese lassen sich in die Kategorien Geschlechterrollen und Sexualität, Dekadenz und Degeneration und Imperialismus unterteilen.

Die nachfolgende Hausarbeit wird sich wegen ihres begrenzten Umfangs auf die Aspekte Degeneration und Verfall konzentrieren, die sich jedoch mit den restlichen Themen teilweise überschneiden.

Um Degeneration und Verfall in einem Werk diagnostizieren zu können, ist es zunächst nötig, Richtgrößen dessen aufzustellen, was als degeneriert und was als gesund - sprich nicht degeneriert - anzusehen ist. Dazu ist zu erwähnen, dass die Vorstellung dessen, was gesund oder moralisch sei, am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts eine andere war als heute. Da ein literaturhistorischer Ansatz gewählt wurde, wird sich die Analyse an damaligen Vorstellungen orientieren. Ich möchte mich ausdrücklich von einer Verurteilung von Homosexualität, Atheismus usw. distanzieren, falls bei der weiteren Lektüre dieser Eindruck erweckt werden sollte.

Das Gesunde erscheint nach damaligen Vorstellungen stets in Form von Dichotomien, deren Paare streng gegeneinander abgegrenzt sind. Jedes Paar lässt sich in einen rationalen und einen irrationalen Pol gliedern. Degeneration und Verfall liegen immer dann vor, wenn sich die Grenzen zwischen den Polen einer Dichotomie auflösen bzw. undeutlich werden.

Für die Analyse werden folgende drei Dichotomien eine Rolle spielen: Mann und Frau, Mensch und Tier sowie Zivilisation und Instinkthaftigkeit.
