Gerhart Hauptmann war 1897 zum dritten Mal in Italien. Zum ersten Mal betrat er 1883 italienischen Boden; damals unternahm er eine Mittelmeerfahrt vom April bis Juni 1883 mit längeren Aufenthalten auf Capri sowie Besuchen in Sorent, Paestum, Pompeji, Herculanum, Neapel (Vesuvbesteigung), Rom und Florenz. Vgl. "Das Abenteuer meiner Jugend". Vom Oktober 1883 bis März 1884 zählt sein zweiter Italienaufenthalt, die römische Bildhauerzeit. Das ausgezeichnete Nachwort zu diesen Tagebuchaufzeichnungen trägt die Überschrift "Dichtung und Dichter an der Wende des 19. Jahrhunderts". Dieser Aufsatz des Herausgebers erschließt zusammen mit den beigegebenen Anmerkungen den edierten Text. Denkbar wäre eine Interpretation, die sich näher an den überlieferten Text hält.

Gerhart Hauptmann begann seine Reise nach Italien, die dritte seines Lebens, am 23. Januar 1897, von Dresden aus; sie dauerte bis 20. Mai 1897. In seiner Begleitung war seine Geliebte Margarete Marschalk.

Das Tagebuch, das der Dichter während dieser 5 Monate lang dauernden Reise führte, spiegelt einen wichtigen Zeitabschnitt im Leben und Werk des Autors, insbesondere zeigt es den Versuch, sich vom Naturalismus zu lösen und die politischen Sympathien, die er für den Sozialismus hegte, abzustreifen.
