Prolog: Die Aufklärung und ihr Geburtsort Frankreich

Das alles erleuchtende Licht im Dunkel der Unwissenheit. Dies ist bis heute eines der bekanntesten Bilder der europäischen Aufklärung. Die auf Vernunft basierende Gleichheit und Brüderlichkeit aller Menschen, die in Frieden miteinander leben, wird, nach zögerlichen Anfängen im späten 17.Jahrhundert,. spätestens im Verlauf des 18. Jahrhunderts zur weltumspannenden Denkrichtung, zu einer Epoche europäischer Geistesgeschichte, welche die moderne Welt bis in die Gegenwart prägt . Die Wissenschaft erhält den Status eines Leitmotives des aufgeklärten Menschen - es geht vor allem um den Austausch von Ideen und Wissen, das 18. Jahrhundert wird durch erhöhte soziale Mobilität zum „Zeitalter des Kosmopolitismus“. Das städtische Bildungsbürgertum ist dabei die kulturtragende Schicht eines gesellschaftlichen Wandels, der dem dritten Stand, unter anderem den Beamten, Kaufleuten oder Handwerkern neue Möglichkeiten, auch in überseeischen Gebieten, bietet.
