Der Befugnisbereich des Aeropags wird drastisch eingeschränkt, so dass von einer Entmachtung desselbigen gesprochen werden kann. Doch auch wenn die Bedeutung der Jahre 462/61 in der Forschungsliteratur unumstritten ist, so gibt bezüglich der politischen Ereignisse noch viele ungeklärte Fragen, die angesichts der schwierigen Quellenlage vielleicht niemals eindeutig beantwortet werden können. Eine wichtige und sehr umstrittene Debatte zum Sturz des Aeropags ist die Frage nach den Gründen für die Änderungen, die von Ephialtes durchgeführt werden. In der älteren Forschung gibt es dazu verschiedene Ansätze. Auf der einen Seite steht der Historiker Berve, der davon ausgeht, dass Ephialtes durch eine bewußt herbeigeführte „Revolution“ die Demokratie in Athen weiterführen wollte, als es die von Kleisthenes geschaffene Ordnung zuließ. Auf der anderen Seite stehen Historiker wie Sealey und Nippel, die davon ausgehen, dass Ephialtes auf Grund seiner außenpolitischen Interessen gegen Sparta die Reform in die Wege geleitet hat. In der neueren Forschung gibt es Stimmen wie die vom Historiker Stahl, der die Ereignisse des Jahres 462/61 als eine notwendige Konsequenz hin zur Entwicklung der Bürgerlichkeit ansieht, die ihren Ursprung in der Erstarkung der Volksmenge haben.
Anhand einer Analyse und quellenkritischen Einordnung der „wichtigsten Quellen zum Sturz des Aeropags“ soll diesen Forschungsansätzen rückwärts-chronologisch nachgegangen werden.
