Das jüngste Beispiel ist hierzulande die Fußballweltmeisterschaft, bei der die Zuschauerzahlen weltweit vor dem Fernseher oder auf den zahlreich aufgebauten Großbildleinwänden unvorstellbare Dimensionen einnehmen. Allein die Zuschauerzahlen in den Stadien sind rekordverdächtig. So werden in den ausverkauften WM-Stadien insgesamt über drei Millionen Fans erwartet.
Fußball avanciert z. Zt. zu dem beherrschenden Thema in den Medien, das alle sonstigen Themen aus Politik und Gesellschaft in den Hintergrund drängt. Am Tag des Eröffnungsspiels der deutschen Nationalelf herrschte eine erwartungsfrohe Festtagsstimmung, wie sie höchstens noch das Weihnachtsfest zu verbreiten im Stande ist. Auf vielen öffentlichen Plätzen in Städten und Dörfern sowie in Gaststätten, Biergärten oder einfach zu Hause versammeltem sich riesige Menschenmassen, um das erste Spiel der Fußballweltmeisterschaft im eigenen Lande zu verfolgen.
Fußball bewegt längst nicht mehr nur die Emotionen von Millionen Menschen, im Fußball selbst werden mittlerweile auch Millionenbeträge bewegt. Der gesellschaftliche Wandel im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts machte somit auch vor dem Fußball nicht Halt. Als Ende Mai 1903 in Hamburg das erste Endspiel um die deutsche Fußballmeisterschaft zwischen dem VfB Leipzig und dem DFC Prag stattfand, steckte der deutsche Fußball noch in den Kinderschuhen. Etwa 2000 Zuschauer brachten damals umgerechnet 473 Mark Umsatz, während Fußball in England bereits Volkssport war und die Stadien seit Jahren regelmäßig füllte. Als beispielsweise Birmingham im Jahre 1913 das Pokalfinale erreichte, standen vierzig Sonderzüge bereit, um die begeisterten Klubanhänger nach London zu bringen. Im ausverkauften Stadion verfolgten damals 120.000 Menschen das Spiel (Schulze-Marmeling 2000: S. 122).
Die Anfänge des modernen Fußballs liegen eindeutig in England, doch schnell gewann das Spiel auch Anhänger in Deutschland. Anfänglich verbreitet im Bürgertum, wurde Fußball in Deutschland mehr und mehr zum Arbeitersport und fand großes Interesse. Kontinuierlich stieg das Interesse am Fußball und der Sport wurde immer beliebter bis hin zum Massenspektakel.
