Klassische Kennzahlensysteme waren oft den Anforderungen des Projektcontrollings nicht gewachsen. Sie hatten häufig das Problem, dass großteils nur monetäre Faktoren miteinbezogen wurden. Weiters wurden nur vergangenheitsorientierte Werte in das System integriert und es wurden keine zukünftigen Entwicklungen eingegliedert. Die Balanced Scorecard greift genau diese Missstände auf und macht sie zu ihrem Vorteil.

Im Bereich des Projektcontrollings soll die Balanced Scorecard vorwiegend dazu dienen die Projektziele auf die Unternehmensstrategie abzustimmen, die Ziele transparent und quantifizierbar zu machen und geeignete Kennzahlen zu entwickeln. Weiters kann die Balanced Scorecard auch zu Auswahl von einzelnen Projekten eingesetzt werden.

Bei der Implementierung der Balanced Scorecard im Projektcontrolling ist es besonders wichtig, darauf zu achten, dass die gesetzten Ziele auf die Unternehmensstrategie abgestimmt werden. Während der Einführung sollen die Mitarbeiter laufend über die neuesten Entwicklungen informiert werden, um dessen Akzeptanz zu erreichen. Bevor mit der Implementierung begonnen werden kann, müssen im Projektmanagement die Strukturen und Hierarchien klar ersichtlich und festgehalten sein. Weiters ist darauf zu achten, die Barrieren der Implementierung durch genaue und zielgerichtete Planung zu überwinden.
