Bei den Germanen war Feuer ein lebendiges mit der Zunge leckendes Tier, das mit Stockschlägen bekämpft wurde. Abgesehen von großen Waldbränden konnten Brände aber auch keinen großen Schaden anrichten, da die Siedlungen sehr klein waren und weit auseinander lagen. Von großen Stadtbränden konnte nicht die Rede sein. Noch die Germanen siedelten sehr weit voneinander und bauten sehr einfache Hütten, die schnell wieder aufgebaut werden konnten.
Jedes Haus war dabei ein potentieller Brandherd, denn offene Feuerstellen zum Heizen und Zubereiten der Mahlzeiten oder Kerzen und Öllampen zur Beleuchtung waren im Alltag unverzichtbar. Als Gefahrenquellen kamen verschiedene Handwerksbetriebe hinzu, die das Feuer ständig nutzten, wie etwa Schmieden oder Töpfereien.
Die zum Hausbau verwendeten Materialien waren leicht entflammbar; besonders in den waldreichen Gebieten waren Holz-Lehm-Bauten der Regelfall.
Insbesondere strohbedeckte Dächer gerieten schon durch Funkenflug leicht in Brand. Auch die strohgefüllten Scheunen und Ställe sowie Warenspeicher waren in erhöhtem Masse feuergefährdet.
Die Brandursachen reichten von grober Fahrlässigkeit im Umgang mit offenem Licht und Feuer welches durch die Eroberungen gelegt wurde.
