Die Arbeit geht problemorientiert vor: Nach einer Definition des Untersuchungsgegenstandes (Was ist eigentlich die «Mitte»?) soll kurz auf die empirischen Grundlagen der Debatte eingangen werden (pro und contra einer neuen Unsicherheit), bevor anhand sozioökonomischer Daten (Größe der
Mittelschicht, Einkommen, Vermögen, Arbeitslosigkeit und Armutsrisiko) versucht wird
zu klären, in wie weit die Mittelschicht in den Vergangenen zehn Jahren wirklich einer größeren «Bedrohung» ausgesetzt ist. Im Anschluss daran werde sollen die im wissenschaftlichen Diskurs vorgestellten Erklärungsmodelle für das zunehmende Unsicherheitsgefühl vorgestellt, bevor im Fazit die Ausgangsfrage wieder aufgegriffen wird.
