Mario Vargas Llosa gehört mit Sicherheit zu den renommiertesten und meistgelesenen lateinamerikanischen Autoren unserer Zeit. Sein literarisches Werk umfaßt dabei, neben mittlerweile vierzehn Romanen, auch Erzählungen und Theaterstücke. Doch Vargas Llosa beschränkt sich nicht allein auf fiktive Texte. In García Márquez: historia de un deicidio1 und La orgía perpetua: Flaubert y Mademe Bovary2 widmet er sich literaturkritischen Themen und formuliert seine eigene Romantheorie. Daneben nimmt er in verschieden Essaybänden, die wichtigsten unter ihnen sind Contra viento y marea I-III3, sowie in unzähligen Zeitungsartikeln und Interviews immer wieder Stellung zu aktuellen politischen und gesellschaftlichen Fragen. Diese Vielschichtigkeit der Themen zeigt, wie wichtig das Spannungsverhältnis von Realität und Fiktion für das Schaffen des peruanischen Autors ist.

Aus diesem Grund soll eben jenes Spannungsverhältnis auch an dieser Stelle den Hintergrund für die Analyse der Gewalt im Werk Mario Vargas Llosas bilden. Gewalt ist ein konstanter Bestandteil seiner Romane. Schon bei der oberflächlichen Lektüre fällt auf, wie sehr diese fiktiven Welten von Gewalt durchdrungen sind, wie sehr sowohl öffentliches, als auch privates Leben von ihr dominiert werden. Ziel dieser Arbeit soll es nun sein, die genaue Rolle zu analysieren, die der Gewalt in drei ausgewählten Romanen Vargas Llosas zukommt. Dabei soll aber auch das Verhältnis von Realität und Fiktion nicht außer Acht gelassen werden, denn wie sich später zeigen wird, weisen die Romane trotz ihres fiktiven Charakters auch immer einen deutlichen Bezug zur peruanischen Wirklichkeit auf.

Um nun den sehr umfangreichen Begriff ‚Gewalt‘ besser fassen und analysieren zu können, sollen drei seiner Erscheinungsformen herausgegriffen werden: gesellschaftliche Gewalt, Autoritarismus als Form von staatlicher Gewalt und terroristische Gewalt. Im ersten Teil dieser Arbeit soll zunächst darauf eingegangen werden, inwieweit diese drei Formen in der peruanischen Geschichte eine Rolle gespielt haben und in welchem Umfang sie dort auch noch heute anzutreffen sind. ...
