Der Begriff der Intermediation ist von dem des Intermediärs zu unterscheiden. Ein Intermediär ist bei der Vermittlung und mindestens in der Anbahnungshase einer Markttransaktion beteiligt. Intermediäre können aber auch in den anderen Phasen einer Transaktion tätig werden, sie stiften Mehrwert durch die Verbesserung der Transaktionseffizienz und -effektivität.

Hotelportale sind Elektronische Marktplätze, die nach verschiedenen Grundmodellen konzipiert sein können. Das Modell, das der Definition nach einen Intermediär darstellt, ist das Makler-Modell mit aktivem und unabhängigem Betreiber.

Fünf ausgewählte Portale wurden analysiert und ihre intermediären Strukturen anhand der theoretischen Erkenntnisse der vorhergehenden Kapitel interpretiert. Drei der Portale sind klassische Hotelportale (HRS, hotel.de und Booking). Bei einem Portal handelt es sich um das Vermarktungsportal eines Hotelkonzerns (Accorhotels). Das letzte Portal ist ein Online-Reisebüro (Expedia).
