Der Band ‚Humanistische Ethik und Erziehung‘ enthält so gut wie alle Publikationen, die Erich Fromm zu Fragen der speziellen Pädagogik verfasst hat. Dass sich Fromm selbst mit Fragen der Erziehung insgesamt wenig auseinandergesetzt hat, mag damit zu tun haben, dass er keine eigenen Kinder hatte. Das Interesse Fromms galt in erster Linie immer den gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen und deren Auswirkungen auf die psychischen Strukturbildungen. Welche Bedeutung dies für die Erziehung hat, wurde von Fromm auch in zwei Beiträgen reflektiert, die er über Alexander Sutherland Neills Einrichtung „Summerhill“ schrieb. Darüber hinaus beschäftigte sich Fromm noch mit der Pädagogik von Father Wasson, einem amerikanischen Franziskaner, der in Mexiko sein erstes Waisenhaus gründete. Wie sehr Erziehung mit – im Frommschen Sinne – produktiven Erziehungszielen zu tun hat, wird in fast allen Beiträgen thematisiert, nicht zuletzt in dem 1959 entstandenen Beitrag „Der kreative Mensch“ und den Beiträgen zur Lebenskunst.
