Vom 17. bis zum 19. Jahrhundert war jedoch Französisch die Verkehrssprache der europäischen Eliten. Verträge wurden in Französisch ausgehandelt und zu Papier gebracht, der Adel führte seine Konversationen auf Französisch und das Lesen französischer Werke im Original gehörte ebenso zu einer guten Erziehung wie ein Aufenthalt in Paris. Erstaunlicherweise schien niemand diese Vormachtsstellung des Französischen in Frage zu stellen. Doch wie kam es dazu, dass aus der Sprache eines Staates die Sprache eines Kontinents wurde? Und wie konnte eben diese Sprache ihren Status wieder einbüßen?
Bereits im 18. Jahrhundert beschäftigten sich Philosophen und Wissenschaftler mit der erstgenannten Frage. Ihre Ideen werden in dieser Arbeit aufgegriffen, müssen jedoch aus heutiger Sicht kritisch betrachtet werden, da die weitere Entwicklung des Französischen damals noch nicht abzusehen war. So kann heute auch die zweite der oben genannten Fragen untersucht werden.
Zur Terminologie der Arbeit ist zu sagen, dass die Begriffe „Verkehrssprache“ und „Universalsprache“ synonym verwendet werden. Zwar wird „Universalsprache“ auch im Zusammenhang mit der Idee einer künstlich konstruierten Sprache zur internationalen Kommunikation (wie zum Beispiel Esperanto) verwendet, doch diente dieser Begriff (frz. „langue universelle“) Philosophen und Wissenschaftlern v. a. des 18. Jahrhunderts zur Beschreibung der Vormachtsstellung des Französischen. Darum wird er in dieser Bedeutung auch hier gebraucht.
Die vorliegende Arbeit gibt zunächst einen Überblick über die Geschichte der französischen Sprache, bevor danach die Gründe für den rasanten Aufstieg des Französischen untersucht werden. Gegenstand des vierten Kapitels ist der Status dieser Sprache vom 17. bis zum 19. Jahrhundert, das heißt ihre geografische Verbreitung und, im Hinblick auf das Seminarthema, die Rolle des Französischen in der Übersetzungspraxis jener Zeit. Abschließend sollen Gründe für den Rückgang des Gebrauchs der französischen Sprache erläutert werden, bevor das Schlusskapitel eine Zusammenfassung der Ergebnisse der Arbeit und einen Ausblick auf die zukünftige Entwicklung des Französischen gibt.
